This is an artistic, ancestral dance that lulls the audience to sleep. Guests are asked to come in barefoot and assume an earthing or grounding posture (lying on the ground) while watching the show. The ceremonialist, while elegantly maneuvering fluid, dance-like movements to the tune of an ambient music, eases the audience to slip into a soporific or hypnagogic state. The hypnagogic state is the period before we fall into a deep slumber.
There’s science behind a ceremonial dance.
This ancient dance is not only scientifically supported. It actually predates our modern understanding of ‘cognitive shuffling’, which sleep scientists have recently discovered and which is becoming increasingly popular. A cognitive shuffle works by keeping the mind’s attention away from worries and racing thoughts by engaging the brain with visual imagery similar to visualization exercises. Looking at a series of soothing images eases the person to fall asleep.
This is exactly what the hypnagogic dance does. However, Suzanne’s approach goes beyond modern scientific discoveries. The ceremonial dance draws deeply from her ancestral wisdom and oral traditions that have been passed down over decades, perhaps even centuries. The ceremony integrates traditional elements including, but not limited to ancient circadian rhythm practices, ancestral postures, artistic movements, ambient music, incense and earthing or grounding techniques—all of which are meticulously curated to create an immersive and sleep-inducing experience.
